Well, there's a law that affects immigrants that the US Congress approved, so the migrants (mostly Mexicans) living/working in the US decided to protest against it by not working on May 1st. They even called it 'A Day Without Immigrants'.
In México, the borders were practically closed since people decided to make human chains and such to avoid others from crossing to 'the other side' (aka USA...hence why they used police officers and soldiers to keep things under control). The boycott also consisted in not using American products or buying anything at an American franchise.
